My preferred method of printmaking is etching. I experiment with the numerous ways of mark making and enjoy the alchemy of the processes, which in them have so many variables that they add an element of magic to the resulting print. My work has an illustrative style and has evolved into two main subject areas. The first has the human condition as its focus and is figure based. The second theme is that of the natural world, and explores the shapes, textures and patterns of nature and how these can be translated into an etching.
Printmaking is a medium that I had been waiting to explore for a long time. At the end of a foundation course in Art and Design (where I specialised in painting) I realised that I should have studied printmaking. Instead of continuing with Fine Art I decided to study History of Art, and was fortunate to do so at University College London. For my final dissertation I researched the role of the medium of printmaking in disseminating ideas in art easily from country to country, and again found myself drawn towards the idea of practising printmaking myself.
For the past four years I have been studying printmaking at St Barnabas Press in Cambridge. Initially I learnt through the courses run at the press, but quickly progressed to using the open access facilities to experiment with the techniques that I had been taught. This has given me the opportunity to develop a portfolio of work, through which I have developed my own style. Printmaking has become a passion for me.
